Obituary for Charles "Tom" Arthur Walter
Charles “Tom” Arthur Walter, 83, passed away on February 14, 2018. He was born February 14, 1935 in La Junta, CO to the late Reuben James and Pearl (Clinger) Walter. He was preceded in death by his brothers Grant, Bob, Alan and Jack Walter and 3 sisters, Ruth Rafferty, Mary Jane Hesslink and Wanda Walter. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Glenna Yvonne Brisco Walter and his brother and sister, William Walter and Edith Hall. He is also survived by his adoring children, Carol Kathleen Kerr (Paul), Diana Yvonne Walter (Pat), Thomas Theodore Reuben Walter (Patricia), Laura Renee Hillstad (Todd), and Wayne Arthur Walter (Tessa). He had 7 grandchildren, Sarah, Katherine, Allison, Elizabeth, Cassandra, Laurel, and Daniel and 4 great-grandchildren, Leif, Sarah, Willow, and Kaiden. He is also survived by many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he also dearly loved. He graduated from La Junta High School in 1953.
Tom was the quintessential cowboy, taking home an award of a paint horse for calf-roping when he was just twelve years of age. He went on to different professions, including training race horses, running a cattle trucking business, and eventually joining the staff at La Junta Livestock, where he worked for 35 years. He traveled the Midwest, and regions beyond, buying and selling cattle, and making friends with every rancher he met. He mentored many a young man as they struggled with their ranches, and was there for so many friends and family in their time of need. Tom loved playing his guitar at the Senior Citizens Center, fishing, Bronco football, Rockies baseball, and his lucky numbers were 7 and 4. The most common phrase the family always heard was “He is a truly good man.” His famous last words were, “Is it done yet?”
There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life at 2:00 on Sunday, February 18, at the La Junta First Church of Nazarene, 1111 West 10th St. in La Junta, CO. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Johnson-Romero Funeral Home of La Junta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Arkansas Valley Hospice.
