Obituary for Chope T. Archuleta M.D.
Chope T. Archuleta M.D. of La Junta, Colorado peacefully entered into rest April 11, 2020
in her home. On May 28, 1956, a child of Richard T. Archuleta and Olga (Vigil), that would do amazing things and that will change communities was born in Pueblo, Colorado. Their first child’s name would be Richard T. Archuleta Jr, a name after her father (later changed to Chope). Chope may have not been their first child, due to Richard having one of his own (Donald Archuletta) and Olga having two (Bill and Patrick Lucero) but Chope was the couple’s first one together. Mike and Ona would be Chope’s younger siblings under the same parents. After the death of his older half-brother Pat, he took on the job of helping raise his younger siblings during this dark time. There are many stories of these kids’ adventures and mischief that are told by each other.
Chope was an extremely bright person who excelled in school. She would graduate from Pueblo East High School and would get a Bachelor of Science Degree at USC Pueblo (what it is called CSU).
She would later go on to CU Denver to study medicine.
During her time in Denver, she met the love of her life Kathryn Odland at a bar between the school where Chope studied and the Pizza Hut Kathryn managed. They would get married on December 14, 1984. One year later they would have their first child who would also be very bright, named Richard Toribio Archuleta, III. One year after their first son was born, they move to Espanola, New Mexico, so Chope could pay back the government (that put her through medical schooling). There she studied for her Board Certified in Internal Medicine Degree. The year that they were leaving New Mexico, their second son Robert Archuleta was born in the state. When they moved to La Junta Colorado, they had a third child named Krystina Archuleta, who happen to also be bright. Chope had worked in La Junta were she also studied and became Board Certified in Hospitalist Medicine.
Later she moved to Denver where she was unhappy about the hospital system there and moved to Lamar. She came out as transgender during this time and officially changed her name to Chope. She wanted to move back to La Junta where she would be closer to her parents who at the time were living in Pueblo. During this time, she studied Sleep Medicine and became Board Certified.
Chope had some hobbies that she was very into. She loved music so much that she learned how to play the guitar. Her favorite artist was Eric Clapton. In Chope’s eyes he was the greatest guitarist. She loved watching action movies (was a big Star Wars fan), crime shows, sports, history, and Fox News. She loved being outdoors especially in the mountains where she could enjoy the scenery and fishing. She would take her family camping, skiing, and places around the mountains. Her favorite place around south east Colorado was Cuchara and Monument Lake. She loved the holidays and special events to see her children together to share time and presents. One of her biggest passions was football and the Denver Broncos. For Forty years Chope would be able to go to the actual games every season, through the good and bad times of the team. Seeing her face light up when they were in the super bowl was priceless and it was even more priceless seeing her happy when they became super bowl champions three times. Chope would collect many things that had the Denver Broncos. She bled orange and blue and was a proud member of Broncos Country. Her biggest passion though was being a doctor and always learning new things. She would say being a doctor is not a job but a lifestyle that shouldn’t just be turned off. She would always be learning new things and being certified in different specialties. She was so good at being a doctor, she had patients from all over just to come to her own practice. Patients would tell her family how amazing she was and their stories of Chope helping and saving some of their lives.
Chope is survived by wife, Kathy Archuleta of La Junta, Colorado son, Robert Archuleta of La Junta, Colorado and daughter, Krystina (Darren Herbert) Archuleta of Kapolei, Hawaii, mother, Olga Archuleta of Grand Junction, Colorado, Brothers, Donald Archuletta of Pueblo, Colorado, Bill (Janie) Lucero of Denver, Colorado, Mike (Stacey) Archuleta of Pueblo, Colorado, sister, Ona (Darren) Ridgeway of Grand Junction, Colorado. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death on March 14, 1968, brother Patrick Lucero, August 12, 2015, her father, Richard Toribio Archuletta, January 23, 2019, and Chope’s oldest child Richard Toribio Archuleta, III.
Chope had a practice in Lamar for 4 years and opened a practice in La Junta for 26 years. Chope had over five thousand patients.
