Obituary for Edith "Babe" Joy Baker
Edith “Babe” Joy Baker 94, of Rocky Ford, Colorado, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Fowler healthcare center with complications of COVID-19. Services for her will be held at a later date in the spring. Edith Joy Poulsom was born October 8, 1926 in Alamosa, Colorado, to William and Joy Poulsom. Her father died when she was three years old. They lived above the grocery store and post office in Mosca, Colorado, and her mom ran them until the Great Depression. Babe’s mom remarried to a man that bought a farm where they lived until babe was a senior in high school and they relocated to Pueblo, Colorado for employment. Babe left a class of three to one of three hundred. This was quite an adjustment. Babe had various jobs until she started working for the telephone company where she joined a bowling league. The league became the Colorado Woman’s Bowling Association Champions at Fort Collins, Colorado in 1959. She met Ivan Baker on a blind date set up by her brother and they married in 1953. At one time they worked in a gold mine in Colorado, then they moved to California where he started working as a Greyhound bus driver and she managed a hardware store. They bought a small farm in Los Lunas, New Mexico, where she raised animals, milked cows and bucked hay bales. When Ivan retired in 1989, they moved to another small farm in Rocky Ford, Colorado, to be near her two sisters. Babe enjoyed ceramics, woodworking and crocheting but most of all she will be remembered for her sense of humor which she never lost. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard and Donald Poulsom and two sisters, Ruth Hensley Syring and Margery Hood as well as a niece Carol Hensley Termer. She is survived by her nephews, Raymond Hensley and Rick Poulsom and niece Violet “Bobby” Johnson and many great-nieces and nephews.
