Edward Claude Chavez, of Ordway, Colorado entered into rest
September 25, 2022 peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born September 14, 1920 in Cuchara, Colorado in a mining
town. He was 102 years of age.
He is survived by five grandchildren, Blue DeHerrera, Joey DeHerrera,
Rachel DeHerrera, Kenny Chavez, Desiree Chavez, numerous great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Victoria Chavez, five brothers, one sister,
children, Debbie Moreno, Kenny Chavez, and Edward Chavez.
Edward was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ordway,
Colorado and a member of the Guadalupe Society, VFW, where he
served as a Chaplin for many years.
Ordway named their park after him and even dedicated a special day,
June 23rd in his name.
He served his country during World War II in the United States Army as
a Medic. He went on Utah Beach on D Day. Edward enjoyed praying the
Rosary for people which was mainly recited in Spanish. He also played
the guitar and watching church on his TV. He was also a great fisherman
since childhood as he grew up in the Huerfano County area and he
herded sheep alone in the mountains when he was only 7 years old. He
was a great man, loved and respected by all those who knew him.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday October 6, 2022
at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ordway followed by Military Honors
and a Committal Service at the Sugar City Cemetery.
