Obituary for Ernestine L. Gurule
Ernestine L. Gurule went to be with the Lord, January 5th, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ernestine was born in Walsenburg, Colorado, August 8th, 1948 to John and Rose (nee Martinez) Mestas of Aguilar, Colorado. Ernestine was an elementary school teacher who began her career teaching in Questa, New Mexico. She then taught for Trinidad Public Schools for 30 years before teaching at Holy Trinity Academy in Trinidad, Colorado. In 1992 Ernestine was named Who’s Who Among America's Teachers. She was the first member of her family to earn a bachelor’s degree from Adams State College and the first member of her family to earn a master's degree also from Adams State College. She was an active member of her Church in Aguilar and volunteered her time to the Apishipa Valley Historical Society. Ernestine also enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Rose.
She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Gurule of Aguilar and Sarah (Jacob McIntyre) Gurule of Pueblo. Ernestine is also survived by her granddaughter Rose Gurule-McIntyre of Pueblo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Max Mestas. Ernestine is survived by her brother John (Myrna) Mestas of Ft. Garland, Colorado, Judith Duval of Hooksett, New Hampshire, Laura Maldonado of Pueblo, Colorado, Reuben (Pamela) Mestas of Denver, Colorado, Paula Trevithick of Denver, Colorado and Richard (Mary Elder) Mestas of Welcome, Maryland. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held for friends and family at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Aguilar. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 A.M. followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 19, 2019. Father Stephen Olamolu will be officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home.
