Obituary for Joseph Alexander Poitier, Jr.
Joseph Alexander Poitier, Jr. of La Junta, Colorado and formerly of Florida, entered into rest December 1, 2022 at the UC Health Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was born to Johnny Mae Petty and Joseph A. Poitier, Sr. August 8, 1943 in Miami, Florida.
He was 79 years of age.
Joseph is survived by his wife Mary Poitier, of La Junta, son Joseph Poitier III, of La Junta, daughter Antoinette (Samuel) Glymp of Pueblo, Colorado, and Suzette (Harry) Simmons of Tampa, Florida.
brothers, Frank Poitier of Tampa Florida, Fredrick Jackson of Miami and sister Mary petty of St. Louis Missouri.
He had 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Joseph was a Professional basketball player. He played for the Floridians of Miami. He was a substitute teacher and P.E. teacher. He also was a great coach. He loved sports and always could be found watching football, golf, tennis and he especially loved basketball. He was the first cousin to the famous actor Sidney Poitier.
He will be greatly missed.
