Obituary for Lillian "Lil" Johnson
Lil was born Lilia Alberta Garcia in Edith, Colorado to Manuel and Adelina (Gomez) Garcia on April 8, 1921. She was the youngest of 8 children. When she was 4 years old her family moved to San Pedro, California. She remembered the train ride with her father and recalled San Pedro back when it had fields of wildflowers. She recalled growing up very poor, sharing everything with her brothers and sisters, and always being surrounded by family. Her family was her chosen community. They were everything to her.
Lil fell in love with Oscar Johnson of Antonito, Colorado and they got married in Los Angeles in 1939. Their son Joseph was born in 1941. They moved to Long Beach in 1995. After Oscar passed in 2007, it was important to Lil to stay in the home she had shared with him. She was able to do so until the fall of 2014 when she moved to a small home in Los Osos, California where she received excellent care. She spent her final years in comfort and safety.
Lil is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and many, many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
Lil will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her great sense of humor and wit, her loving generous heart, her youthful spirit, and her charming demeanor. For all her softness, she was also a clever, strong, resilient, and resourceful woman. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
