Obituary for Mildred Hazel Mitchell
Mildred McCormick Mitchell died Monday, August 27th at the age of 97. She lived a full and meaningful life as a wife, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, writer, friend and helper. She had made her peace, and was ready to go home.

Born on a farm in Des Moines, Iowa to Homer McCormick and Hazel Rusher, Millie was raised along with her brother, Vern, and much later, her younger twin sisters, Katherine and Kathleen. In June 1945, she married navy man, Jack Mitchell with whom she had 4 children: Diana, Robert, Raymond, and Glenn.

Mildred—or “Millie,” as she was widely known—was one of the first WACs (Women in the Army Corps). As a Sergeant, she proved herself as a leader of others, using both their fears and skills to find the best outcomes in tough situations. After leaving the military, she traveled widely with Jack and asked for little. Millie exercised daily her whole life, including using the exercycle and walking through her senior living community in La Junta every day. After Jack’s passing, Millie went to live with her sister, Katherine, and brother-in-law, Mike Westwood. Millie attended church in Cheraw regularly, easily making friends and acquaintances who will mourn her passing today.

Millie leaves behind children Robert, Diana, and Glenn, their spouses, Betty and Katy Mitchell, 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

If you ever asked Mildred how she was, she jokingly answered, “Fine as frog hair and just as useless.” Millie never complained, and she was always there to lift others up with her sense of humor. She was a wise, humble, patient, kind, and forgiving woman who spent her final days watching out for others in her retirement home. The passing of Mildred Mitchell is a loss to many. Please join us in blessing her passing, and thinking of her every time we see her favorite totem—a butterfly.
