Obituary for Shirley Jean Gilbert
Shirley Jean Gilbert, entered into rest, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 in La Junta, Colorado. Shirley was born Feb. 22, 1944 in La Junta. In the late fifties she moved to Denver where she met Edward Cec. In 1961 they were married. They had three children; Patricia, Edward Jr. and Joseph. She had various jobs during that time, but her first priority was that of homemaker and raising her family. Some of her fondest memories were going to the mountains for family picnics. She and Edward parted ways in the mid-seventies. Shirley left Denver and travelled across county for a period of time driving pilot cars for oversize semi loads. She returned to her hometown in the mid-eighties and worked as a waitress at both the Capri and Copper Kitchen where she met her second husband, Frank Gilbert. Frank and Shirley married in 1989 and made their home in Rocky Ford. She was delighted to acquire grandchildren, from Frank's first marriage, and took pleasure in the role of grandmother for the first time. Later, she gained another granddaughter from her son Ed. Shirley was exposed to the exciting world of rodeo through Frank's lifelong passion. She loved the social aspect of traveling with Frank to the various rodeo events and made many friends along the way. Sadly, Frank passed away in June 2004. Not long after, she moved back to La Junta and remained there until her death. In her younger years, Shirley enjoyed painting, restoring antique furniture and interior decorating. Later, she participated in senior citizen dances, group travels and playing card games with her friends. Shirley was a very caring and social person. She kept close contact with her family and friends and always offered help to anybody that needed it. She truly enjoyed life and will be greatly missed. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, George and Viola (Drayton) Pointon, husbands, Edward Cec and Frank Gilbert. Shirley is survived by her sons, Edward and Joseph Cec, daughter, Patricia Cec and husband David Archer, her brothers, George, David, Jeffery, and Andrew Pointon, sister, Julie Pointon, 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
