Obituary for Peggy Bates
Peggy Bates (Grammie, Mom, Aunt, Good Friend) entered into rest, July 13, 2016, at home. It was important for her to be home and, by golly, she was (determined, as she always was).

She enjoyed 95 life-filled years and we are certain she would have stayed a while longer if her body had been willing.

She was married to Norris (Slim) Bates and her parents were Charles and Lora Wissler. She had three brothers Merle, Keith and Rex (all deceased).

Most will remember her as Peggy at Peggy’s Cafe, Rocky Ford (she and Slim also owned and operated the Mars Nite Club in the 50s and 60s). Very few know that her given name was Oneda Magdalene Wissler, but renamed herself Peggy at the age of 5.

Slim and Peggy’s song was “Peg of My Heart."

Everywhere she went, she saw and greeted people she had met over her many years in Rocky Ford. She never knew a stranger and made a friend no matter where she went. We will greatly miss the visiting taking place when we were with her – especially trying to remember someone’s name, family affiliation, or how they fit into that particular memory. (The resolution could take a while and, most generally, led to more memories — so many precious memories.)

She is survived by her daughter Shelia Burns of Rocky Ford and son Gary Bates of Albuquerque. Her grandchildren Chad Burns, Jeff (deceased) Blayne and Ashlie Burns, Chris Bates and family, Yvonne, Nicolle, and Jessica Bates, Peggy Current and family, Josh Bates and family, David Bates and family, Allison Wickershiem and family. And of course her many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

God bless her on her next journey.

A memorial service will be held, Friday, July 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Church in Swink.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Arkansas Valley Hospice, 531 Lewis Ave. La Junta, CO 81050.
