Obituary for Donna Mae Gilmore
Donna Mae Gilmore, of Elizabeth Colorado, entered into rest on June 15th, 2020 at Littleton Adventist Hospital, with her family by her side.
A true Colorado Native, Donna was born October 20, 1938, in Englewood Colorado to Grace Howell and Albert L Brainerd. She was 81 years of age. Being from a military family, Donna lived at Fort Logan military base until the family moved to her Great Grandparent’s homestead on the Tarryall River in South Park Colorado. Donna had vivid memories from her childhood at the homestead, playing with her brother on rock outcroppings, watching tiny ducklings swim in a pond and enjoying the abundance of nature and outdoor life. Donna was a lover of animals and nature throughout her life.
Donna eventually moved back to Englewood where she attended Englewood High School and married Norris Miller in November of 1958. They had 3 children together and she loved her 3 little girls. She was always curling and brushing their hair and making them look pretty. Easter was always a highlight for her as she could dress the girls up and make special Easter baskets for them. She found a best friend in her neighbor Sharon and they both enjoyed raising their girls, laughing and having good times together. Donna was a very good seamstress and made clothing for herself and her girls. She even taught her girls to make clothes for their Barbie dolls. She was an excellent cook and she enjoyed entertaining and having dinner parties.
Donna worked for many years helping young mothers and children at the Tri County Health Department, and later on, as a Customer Service Representative at Diners Club International. Her work with the Tri County health department inspired her to Foster children in her home, which was a rewarding experience for her and her family. She was very ambitious, organized and prided herself in being efficient and productive. Donna was a “nester” and loved having a clean and tidy home. She loved antiques and old things that told a story. She took up painting to express her admiration of nature and her American Indian heritage. She was also gifted with the art of storytelling and writing.
She remarried Donald Gilmore in 1974, and they enjoyed camping in their 5th wheel trailer and attending the hot air balloon festivals in Steamboat Springs. Together they purchased a home in Keystone and later a house in Elizabeth. They enjoyed many home improvement projects on both houses and Donna took such pride in both of her homes. Donna and Don have called Elizabeth home for the past 20 years. She loved the country life, the sprawling pastures, and especially the birds that came to visit. She was at home and at peace in Elizabeth, where neighbors became friends and friends became family. She called Don her “Honey” and she loved him with all of her heart.
Donna was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Dianne Wolfe.
She is survived by her husband, caregiver and best friend, Donald Gilmore of Elizabeth Co; her daughter Angela Page of Dillon Co; her daughter Laura Johnson of Montezuma Co; her grandson Kyle Wilkinson of Aurora Co; and half-sister Brandy Daniel of California.
Cremation has taken place. An Interment/ Memorial Service will be held at 9:15 A.M. Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the loving care of the Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home.
