Obituary for Neil Charles Smith
Neil Charles Smith went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2022. He was born on January 28, 1927, in Fort Collins, CO to Guy and Clara Smith and spent most of his childhood in Fort Collins. At the young age of 17, Neil enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII from January 1945 – November, 1947. Upon his discharge, he used his muster pay to buy a 1939 Ford Convertible which allowed him to pursue his passion in cars. He then used the GI Bill to go to a trade school to become an auto mechanic. On May 19th, 1950, he married the love of his life, Irene Doris Cleveland. In 1957, they moved to Fowler, CO and had 62 wonderful years together. Alan Neil Smith was born on May 13th, 1951. Pamela Sue Smith was adopted into their family on May 17th, 1961.

He was employed at the Pueblo Army Depot for 33 years where he started as auto mechanic, transferred into missiles, and ended his career as a precision machinist building gyros and testing accelerometers. After retiring from the Depot, Neil drove a bus for Fowler Schools 14 years. Many of the students he transported kept in contact with him for years.

Neil and Irene both came to faith in Jesus Christ soon after they were married. He loved the Lord and passed down a legacy of faith to his family. Neil enjoyed serving in the Pitkin Avenue Baptist Church, as a trustee and also serving as treasurer for 37 years. He also served on the Victim’s Assistance Board for 8 years. He and Irene enjoyed hunting and fishing with life-long friends, they also enjoyed gardening and canning together. Neil was a very devoted husband and father. After Irene was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he desired to care for her, which he did for the 12 years she had Alzheimer’s. He sat by her bedside reading the Song of Solomon to her as she was welcomed into heaven. What a beautiful love story.

He had a genuine love for people and showered them with kindness. Even in his later years, when he was in so much pain, he continued to show kindness to everyone he met. He longed for the day when he would meet Jesus and is now wrapped in His loving arms, but he will be missed by his family, friends, and the community.

Neil is survived by his daughter Pam (Edward) of Gunnison, CO; grandchildren Alan Christopher (Barbara) of North Richland Hills, TX; Sheila (Grant) of Birmingham, AL; Corbin (Alexis) of Littleton, CO; Bryce (Jessica) of St. Cloud, FL; Eddie of Colorado Springs, CO; Andy (Kendall) of Castle Rock, CO; Matt (Stephanie) of Gunnison, CO; and great-grandchildren Thomas, Joshua, Jason, Jacob, Abby and Lilah. Neil is preceded in death by his wife, Irene; son, Alan; parents, Guy and Clara; and sibling, Delbert Wayne.
